HAPPY belated BLOGIVERSARY!

OMG, I thought my blogiversary was Feb. 8th, and when I checked again, I realized it was Feb. 3rd!! How did I miss my own blogiversary? Damn!

Four days late, I am celebrating ONE full year of blogilicious, blogtastic, blogonderful, blogilarious, bloginess with a delicious e-cake. Want a slice?

Cake designed by the amazing Canadian pastry chef Blair Fukumura. Check out his work; it's incredible! Also, go see Fluevog's response and the actual shoe. Such love.

Once you're finished snacking, head on over to the
brand-new
fancy-pants
loaded-with-photos
oozing-sass
FEMIKNIT MAFIA FINISHED OBJECTS

I've been slaving away at the keyboard for a couple months, so I hope you like it. After a year of blogging, I think it's a safe bet that I'll continue for a bit longer. So I took the time to compile all the photos, ball bands and stories for every one of my knit creations. Yes folks, I listed all 44 of the crazy things I've created since Wifey taught me how to throw a stitch in October 2003. I've included the good, the bad and the hideous. Feel free to snark and snort at the evolution of my knitting.

To further amuse, I followed the excellent linkage over at Mellow Trouble (yes, I'm obsessed with her), and found the Celtic Chart Generator. It's SO fun!

The obvious first attempt:

Attempt #2

A reminder to me for KY06

A reminder, as I age, that I'm hot-hot-hot in my own mind

And

Which gets me thinking about

Which is a naturally leads to

This one's for BFF&exGF#2

And this one's Nina-Speak for 'spill your guts'.

Here's one for President Bush

And let's not forget Dick Cheney

And finally, we'll end with something nice and sweet for all you yarn-peddlers who got me sucked into this fabulous craft. Thanks.

Love to all and to all a good [sexy] night. Slainte!

Nan

I spend a wonderful weekend in Philly. In addition to pictures and stories that I'll post later, I spent some time with BFF&exGF#2's very old and ailing Nanny. I love Nan. She's old, cranky, needy, loving, snuggly, cute, sassy and smart. I hung out at Nan's new (undesired, but one-floor) apartment on the couch while Danielle wiped down the kitchen and took care of other weekly tasks. Nan was in a great mood on Sunday, but still managed to complain about everything related to being old and feeble. In the midst of it, she moaned about her hands, "you know, these hands used to crochet, knit, do needlepoint…" Ding, ding, ding - I started paying extra attention, but before I could start speaking Knit, we were interrupted by the travils of daily life.

So during my scheduled weekend trip to Loop, we found big chunky "Peace Pink" Blue Sky Alpacas handpainted yarn (Nan can see light colors only) and big fat size 19 Crystal Palace plastic needles. Danielle will present the yarn and needles to Nan this weekend. I can't wait to hear her reaction. I am determined to get those wrinkly, achy, old hands stitching again. Keep your needles crossed ladies. Nan needs all your psychic-purl support.

In funny Nan news, here's part of an email that Danielle sent to me today:

I spent like 40 minutes on the phone last night trying to troubleshoot Nan's cable tv problems.

Nanny (shrieking): "donielle...my channels are fuzzy...all the ones i watch...it's like snow or something...here, 3...snow...6...snow...7...snow...8...snow...9...snow...10...snow..."

Danielle (sighing and laughing and thinking she needs video calling): "aww nan, did you break the tv again? okay nanny, let's see. can you please go to the tv in the bedroom and tell me if the same thing is happening?"

Nanny (mumbling): "11...snow..12...snow.."

Danielle: "so, snow in the bedroom too?"

Nanny (shrieking again): "what? you want me to go in the bedroom?"

Danielle: "nan, weren't you listening? yes...that way we can try to figure out if it's the cable or just something with the tv in the living room."

Nanny: "what? you think something is wrong with the cable?"

Danielle: "that's what we're trying to figure out! just go in the bedroom please and check the channels"

Nanny: "okay...hold on...hmm...33 is clear."

Danielle: "was that channel fuzzy in the living room?"

Nanny: "I don't know."

Danielle: "ughghghggh..nan! you aren't helping here. turn on channel 11, which you said was fuzzy in the living room and tell me if that one is fuzzy."

Nanny: "okay, yes, snow."

Danielle: "and you definitely get that channel normally?"

Nanny: "11 was my 12"

Danielle: "what? nan, I know the channels are different in the suburbs than in the city, but just tell me if you got channel 11 yesterday."

Nanny: "10 snow...9 snow...8...snow"

Daneille: "okay, okay, i know, snow! so all the low channels are snowy but all the high channels work?:

Nanny: "huh? what?"

Danielle: "nan, if you want me to help, you have to listen. flip through the high channels that you normally watch and tell me if they are coming in."

Nanny: "like my TBS? yes, 22 clear...23 clear...24 clear..."

Danielle: "okay enough. go in the living room and tell me if channel 22, 23 and 24 come in."

Nanny: "what? you want me to go in the living room?"

eheheheheheh. You can imagine how the rest of this conversation went. This is what I do with my evenings. I think that whole conversation would have worked better if Little Man had been holding the remote. Blog that!

I love old people. If I were a photographer, I would photograph wrinkly skin. But damn ... I feel Nan's frustration. Not being able to see well, walk steadily, drive, and walk more than 20 feet would drive me insane. I'll definitely be a cranky, needy, loving, snuggly, cute, sassy and smart old lady, and I hope that I have a granddaughter like Danielle that I can annoy.

I'm around ... sorta

More for Mom

Thank Dog for Mellow Journal. I knew I saw this hat somewhere, and I was frustrated by my fruitless searches to find it again. Isn't hers SO cute?

The reason for my searching is that my Mom, the post-divorce-mid-life-crisis-avid-skier would LOVE this hat from the Bea Ellis Knitwear site.

Maybe this could be Mom's 50th birthday present? If so, I have until July 11th to finish it. Which ... considering that I have all those MamaCate-inspired projects in the queue for Mom, I'll be knitting for Mom until July, so it'll fit in perfectly. From now until eternity, I will love my Mother through knit goods.

Porcupine & Black Ash

I first saw Joanne Russo at an art show a couple years ago, and I was fascinated by her baskets. Unlike many of the artists at the show, Joanne Russo came prepared with social skills. She took the time to explain her materials and inspirations. I was sad that I couldn't buy one, but hoped to see her again.

I did. About a year ago, I was walking through the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston with a friend. We saw some baskets and I thought of Joanne Russo, so I told the friend about her baskets and the amazing materials she uses. Not 2 minutes later, we rounded a corner and I saw one of Joanne Russo's baskets encased in glass. At the MFA!! I was so excited, I probably looked like a moron to the staid sophisticated elderly wasps. But, hell, it was cool!

Since then, I've periodically purused her website and watched the prices go up. [good for her, I say] And last week, while wandering through the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA, I ran into another Joanne Russo basket encased in glass. Shit, this girl's really gettin' around! And then today ... I noticed that the PEM is using Russo's basket as the premier piece to showcase their American Decorative Art collection.

I love her work. I'm fascinated. I'm intrigued. Go check out her website and let me know what you think. She's doing some interesting work with beads and hooks/eyes these days. She recently made a basket with a -functional- zipper down the side, but it has disappeared from the site. I especially love this one:

"Red Button Teapot"

note: Make sure to read Barbara Moore's quote on pg.1 of Russo's site. Clearly Barbara Moore is smoking too much pot. Just sayin'.

P.S. While at the PEM, I saw the Teapot exhibit. If you have the chance, you must see this. It was incredible!

I'm a Junkie

With everything on my plate right now, I tried not to get pulled into this insanity. I'm a great cheerleader, said I. I'll jump around and scream from the sidelines. I'll be a ...

But was hard.
Real hard.
Too hard.
I got sucked in.

The MIT SnB is officially joining 1366 (and counting) other masochistic idiots delightful knitters and entering a relay team in the Yarn Harlot's Knitting Olympics. We're still working out the details, but it appears that we'll be making a blanket for Afghans for Afghans. I've committed to 2-3 8x8" squares. We already have our own button, thanks to Christine!

In order to compete in the Team portion, I'll still be Likkered Up and cheering for these folks in their individual events:

Team Boston, found at Obsession Du Jour

Danielle and Rhonda, on Team Fair Isle USA

GO TEAM!

update: Jess defected and joined Team Cable USA. One more group to cheer for!

Ok ... I'm procrastinating

I'm supposed to be developing a syllabus, assigning readings, deciding on in-class activities, gathering supplemental readings, establishing expectations, writing objectives, etc...

Ever since saying that I wasn't going to post again until March, I've been obsessed with this damned blog. Now everything shouts, "Blog Me!" Not to mention, my 1st Blogiversary is coming up soon. Shouldn't I acknowledge that by announcing something new and cool -- something I've been working on for a while and keeping semi-secret? Danielle's birthday is coming up, and she would like a little shout out. (she's not shy, in case anyone was wondering.) Little Man is doing fun and interesting things. I'm doing weird things (as usual) like wearing sneakers today. Who wears these things? Shouldn't that be discussed? I have all these f-ing memes that I promised to respond to. Can I do that without revealing too much about me? Mysterious Scorpio that I am. Also, can we discuss the constant misspelling of the word "weird" in blogland? People that I know well, are wicked smart, are excellent writers and tell a kickass story ... but can't spell WEIRD? Several people. Argh!

You see the dilemma? Even if there's no knitting, can't there be Living? Life? Observations? Bitching? I can't assault Wifey with all of my random thoughts, so shouldn't I assault you instead? If I'm allowed back into the fold, there might even be teaching stories...

And about that knitting thing ... can't I just knit a little stockinette? Some mindless garter scarf or something? Puh-lease? Pretty please? My fingers are threatening to dive straight for my nose in a public place unless they get a bit of the yarn-crack. Help!!

I'm off to act like a fool in front of 17 impressionable minds. In the meantime, feast on this:

See you in March.

+Court+

The very important date in court went perfectly. We were granted a home study waiver, which probably saved us $1500 and the humiliation of having a social worker visit our house several times to determine if we're 'fit parents'. Once the judge and my attorney swap calendars, a finalization date will decided upon, and I'll dance around in my underwear.

There are excellent resources all over the web:
GLAD
GLAD's piece on co-parent adoption in Massachusetts *warning: it's a PDF*
The National Gay & Lesbian Task Force's U.S. map of adoption law *PDF*
The Human Rights Campaign's bit
National Coalition for Lesbian Rights

Tuesday was an excellent day all around. Late in the evening I got a call from an old colleague who offered me a teaching gig for a 6 week class. So I'll be MIA until March 8th while I stress over standing in front of a class. Must go write a syllabus -- eek!!

Mafia the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Today's list of Pros and Cons

-1: I have a wicked cold. I'm cranky, snotty, conjested, achy, tired, and otherwise pissy. Did I mention cranky?

-2: I just started bleeding. Fuck. Period + cold = bitch-ass-whore with attitude. Just sayin'.

-3: Please reference above hormonal and white cell insanity when I say that my complexion is a disaster! I'm 31, not 13. What is this?

-4: Which leads me to -- I have no photos of my FINISHED celtic cap. I love it. It loves me. We're very happy together. But the cyberworld must wait for my white cells to finish working on my sinuses and move back to my skin before I'll even dream of posting a lovely cabled head shot.

+1: Did I mention that I finished the CELTIC CAP?! Hooray!

+2: With the addition of this AMAZING piece of technological-peace-love-happiness-commuter's-wet-dream to my life, I've been ripping CDs like mad. Currently listening to old school Arrested Development. Love.

+2: I love my brand new haircut. It's ME, not the suburan mom that I've been posing as for months. (I have nothing against suburan moms, in fact, I'm married to one. But I am -not- one.) My hair looks like this:

That's my new avatar on Yahoo. It's a fun graphic generator that links to your Yahoo mail account. I found it here. It's wicked fun to create my cyberself. It's like having a grown-up and decidedly more attractive Mafia-Barbie doll. Weird, but fun.

+3: It's a long weekend, followed by a very important date in Family Court on Tuesday. If you keep your fingers crossed for me on Tuesday, I promise to explain the mystery on Wednesday.

It's National DeLurking Week!

Snagged from An Elephant's Gestation (aka exGF#3), who is a marvelous writer. If you're interested in domestic transracial adoption by two lesbians, this is your site. Just to answer your question: Yes, I am still friends with most of my exGFs. For better or worse, 'tis the way of the lesbos.

The originator of this cool idea is Paper Napkin.

There's also my Frappr. Give a shout out.

Thanks y'all!

Overdue Meme #1

I've managed to avoid memes for the last 11 months. But for some reason, December was meme-happy, and I was tagged for 3 (and another 1 in January - damned exGF#3!). So I'll be posting a meme here and there until I complete my homework.

This one is from Mellow Journal: "List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your blog along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they’re listening to."

iTunes sayeth:

1. Toes - Norah Jones
2. Angel Band - Vinal Avenue String Band
3. Little Martha - The Allman Brothers
4. Michelangelo - Emmylou Harris
5. Sourire - Les Nubians
6. In the Morning - Norah Jones
7. My Baby Needs a Shephard - Emmylou Harris

This is an odd list and not what I expected. It's probably because I keep iTunes on shuffle most of the time, and I only have a few CDs on this computer. Perhaps I'll do this meme again in a couple months when I have my full selection loaded.

Cranking Celtic Cap

I love cables. I love the pattern. I love the yarn (color 50). I love that the designer emailed within hours of me asking her a question.

See how happy I am, peeking around the cube wall at my next door knitting neighbor?

Big steps in my knitting life -- this hat might fit my head correctly; and I measured the gauge swatch without any help from my favorite OCD precise knitter. The Mafia's growing up!

Handmade Holiday ReCap

1) Scarf for Mom

2) Fingerless gloves for 13yoSIL

3) Fingerless gloves for 16yoSIL

4) Beanie for Bro. FYI - he's 24, newly single, sweet and appreciates knit goods.

5) Purple&Pink Bean Bag set for Lily

6) Cowgirls Bean Bag set for Leila

7) Vegetables Bean Bag set for Owen

8) Bean Bag set for Charlotte
- not done. we decided not to exchange gifts.

9) Toddler legwarmers for Ms. G

10) Cut flannel lap blanket for my Gramma

- No photo. I forgot. eek! Little did I know that Gramma had fallen on the ice a couple days before Christmas, so she was bruised and heavily medicated. Even though this blanket was the source of drinking, swearing, throwing of scissors on the floor, and refusing to gift it, Gramma LOVED it. She immediately threw it over herself and didn't move from the recliner for hours. If you're interested in making a homemade chenille blanket, there's a great online resource. Unfortunately I didn't Google prior to embarking. Silly Mafia. Typical. MamaRoo's Mom made an amazing handmade chenille blanket, which I snuggled under and thought, "I could make this..." Note to self: beware of over-confidence. Always Google highly skilled crafters.

11) Framed photos of Little Man and my Mom (for Mom)
12) Framed photos of Little Man and Papa (for Papa)
- Didn't do these, 'cuz the Red-As-Emma-bank wouldn't allow it

13) Felted clogs for 28yoSIL's early January birthday
- Didn't do these. Turns out, she'd rather have a kit for making braided rugs. Wifey tried to give away my braided rug kit, but I threw a temper tantrum (it was my favorite Gram's!!), so we found one on eBay. Phew!

14) Socks for Alice's almost-a-baby-girl
- Haven't done these, and I'm not sure that I will. Still contemplating.

and the last minute additions ...

15) Hat and scarf for Dad. Irish Hiking scarf, with my addition of a seaman's neckband, was a wonderful pattern that I would strongly recommend.

16) Felted recyled sweater tote bag for Wifey's pal Barbara (stash sweater grudgingly surrendered by Mafia; felted, sewn and embroidered by Wifey). Flower is from AlterKnits, on loan from the library. Love this book!

17) painted chalkboard and wooden letters for 16yoSIL
- Finished but photoless. Not very exciting.

18) 10 painted ornaments for family (by Little Man)
- Finished, but photoless. Cute as hell and much appreciated.

19) 4 wreaths with cut greenery
- One is on our front door. The others were deemed unworthy as tossed.

Bottom Line: I finished everything that was necessary and changed my mind on a couple others. There was certainly a Panic Attack though, so 65.2% of you were RIGHT. (Mafia grudgingly admits she overshot, as usual.) However, Hey-Zeus must have assisted because my hair isn't white.

Crafting Disaster

Here's a sneak peek at the Panic Attack of Dec. 23rd:

Tea (upper)
Cake (just because I wanted it, damn it)

Very large ball of thread (can you guess which giftie caused the panic attack?)

The Shortest Day

Cate, you have a fan club and I'm officially a member. The secret handshake is in the development phase. Great post!

Wifey has been a member of the Revels cast several times dating back to the 1980s. She thinks of Revels as a family, and draws inspiration from their resurrection of traditional holiday celebrations. Even Little Man treasures the On Christmas Day in the Morning book. Every year Wifey calls her sister on the Solstice to wact recite The Shortest Day, loudly, dramatically. It's hilarious and beautiful.

The Shortest Day
By Susan Cooper

And so the Shortest Day came and the year died
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive.
And when the new year's sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, reveling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us - listen!
All the long echoes, sing the same delight,
This Shortest Day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And now so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.
Welcome Yule!

With the recent death of Revels founder John Langstaff, I send light and love to his family and to the entire Revels community. All Things Considered did a nice memorial piece. The Boston Globe published a lovely obituary. We will be attending the memorial services to be held in late February.

In my fantasy world, I would attend a Revels performance every Dec. 21st. However, Sander's Theatre at Memorial Hall would be magically transported to Co. Meath. Then we'd dance over to Newgrange for the stunning display of Celtic genius.

Even without combing every corner of the globe, I can safely say that Newgrange is my favorite place on the planet. Wifey and I had the privilege of traveling through Ireland in early 2002. We bought a plane ticket, a set of B&B vouchers, and reserved a car. We had no agenda. It was perfect. We spent time the first couple days on the Aran Islands (go ahead, be jealous), then traveled through Co. Galway, Co. Sligo (where we met Wifey's great-uncle), Co. Westmeath, Co. Meath, and Co. Dublin (where we picked up the trail of my ancestors at the National Archives (who issued me a bi-lingual English-Gaelic photo ID).

Wifey jokes that without intending to, we did the "pre-Christian tour of Ireland," and I have hundreds of photos of carved stone to prove it. While in Co. Meath, we spent a long time at Newgrange and the surrounding sites, and I fell deeply in love with the area. Unlike archeological sites in the U.S., the Irish authorities allow people to touch, enter and truly experience the wonders. On a guided tour, we walked into the center of the Neolithic tomb, saw the roof box that illuminates the central chamber every year on the Solstice, and touched the rock that my ancestors cut, carved, and cherished.

Every year, there's a lottery to determine who is invited to enter Newgrange on the Solstice. Someday I will be there to see the light of the sun shine into this 5,000 year old stone chamber. In the meantime, I will ink this image into the skin between my shoulder blades:

The tri-spiral on the left of this photo, from the entrance stone at Newgrange, was supposed to be added to my body on my 30th birthday, but we were broke-ass-broke. For my 31st Birthday, we were broke-ass-broke. As soon as I see a teeny windfall (Christmas?), I'm heading to the tattoo shop in Rhode Island.

Let the new Sun shine on my finances and allow me to tattoo homage to my ancestors over the center of my spine.

WELCOME YULE!!

Happy Birthday BFF&ExGF#2!!

One of my very favorite people is having a birthday today, and I wish her all the happiness in the entire world. If this coming weeked is half as good as last weekend, she's certainly having a good time. She also just started a blog (mostly about her international jet-setting), so go check it out. She'll be the lucky recipient of the lovely-rusty Lace Poncho whenver I get my so-sorry ass to the post office. And there are other gifties too, which are in transit.

Little Man needs this

See, I can do it!

As requested by Beth, here is a photo, taken by Little Man, of me sewing and knitting at the same time. Take note of a small white cat sitting at my feet. Yes, Lugh sits there. She also sits on my machine and plays with the thread until I toss her. She's known for being a PITA extraordinaire.

A New BABY!!

MamaRoo had Baby Joey late last night! Both are happy and healthy. MamaRoo reports that BigBabyJoey weighed in at 8lbs, 14 oz. with strawberry blond hair and lovely earlobes. She says he looks like a little old man. I can't wait to meet him! Do you think I could squeeze in some additional baby knitting? A hat? Some socks? Baby legwarmers? I'm so excited I can barely sit.

FOs

I'm a little behind on posting pictures, but here are two items that I finished last week:

13yoSIL's fingerless gloves - my first pair, with all implied wonkiness

16yoSIL's fingerless gloves

I also finished my Bro's hat and one set of bean bags, but forgot to take pics. Maybe this weekend?

*inappropriate use of office supplies and appropriate use of digital camera thanks to Danielle. While my computer issues are being resolved, Danielle has been my camera 'ho. She's very good. I'd recommend her.

Spork & Beanie

Wouldn't that title be a good band name?

I love the Spork bag. It looks exactly like a TimBuk2 bag. So urban lesbo chic. I must have it. Perhaps after Christmas, I'll join the Spork Knit-Along. Note to Mafia: everytime you've tried the Custom Bag Builder, you've opted for a grey, burgundy, black combo, so keep an eye out for Lamb's Pride worsted in those colors.

In Christmas knitting news -- I am an idiot. I had to rip out 2" of my Bro's beanie cuz I was decreasing way too fast. I thought it looked weird, and Danielle thankfully confirmed that I was making a dumb mistake (my words, not hers). So I ribbited back and started the decrease section again. Here's a happy and warm dawg in an MIT window -

For the techical folks out there, it's 2x2 rib, cable cast-on, size 4 Addis (yes, I'm a wicked loose knitter. resist the temptation to make a snarky comment about me being loose.). I'm using the Hats that Fit pattern by Nancy Lindberg which is based on excellent stealth measuring by my crafty Mom. She walked into Bro's room at 7am, wrapped a tape measure around his head, then over his noggin, and left. He barely noticed.

Here's hoping that I'll finish tonight. Send good vibes, k?

Skeptics beware

What does a girl need for motivation? A red-as-Emma bank balance and a vote of 65% for "She'll downsize the list during the Panic Attack of Dec. 23rd." I am officially rocking the handmade holidays kids. That's why I've been MIA. I'm knitting and sewing. Shhh ... can you hear the clicking needles and drone of the machine? Yes, I can do both at once. Don't believe me? Well ... shut up, yes I can. In fact, I'd better, because I made the mistake of chatting with my Dad about his Christmas wishes. When he claimed that socks and undershirts were fine presents, I should have said OK. Instead I said, Oh Dad, don't be ridiculous. I'm not buying you socks and undershirts for Christmas! (bad move Mafia!) He said, Well are you still knitting? I said Yes into the phone, while my head swirled with Shit!Shit!Shit! He said, Well ... I could use a nice hat and scarf. I said, Yeah, that's what I'm talkin about Dad. That's a real Christmas present. What color is your coat?

And so it began ... the last minute additions to the handmade holidays listing. Here's an update:

1) Scarf for Mom (DONE!)
2) Fingerless gloves for 13yoSIL (DONE!)
3) Fingerless gloves for 16yoSIL (DONE!)
4) Beanie for Bro (10%)
5) BeanBag+wooden box sets for: Lily (20%)
6) " " Leila (20%)
7) " " Owen (20%)
8) " " Charlotte (20%)
9) Secret knit-thing for Ms. G (since her MamaRoo reads the blog, I have to be quiet.) (DONE!)
10) Cut flannel lap blanket for my Gramma (5%)
11) Framed photos of Little Man and my Mom (for Mom) (0%)
12) Framed photos of Little Man and Papa (for Papa) (0%)
13) Felted clogs for 28yoSIL's early January birthday (0%)
14) Socks for Alice's almost-a-baby-girl (0%)

and the additions ...

15) Hat and scarf for Dad (5%)
16) Felted recyled sweater tote bag for Wifey's pal Barbara (DONE! by Wifey)
17) painted chalkboard and wooden letters for 16yoSIL (80%)
18) 10 painted ornaments for family (by Little Man) (30%)
19) 4 wreaths with cut greenery (DONE! by Wifey)

I'll try to post pictures sometime this week.

Dear Dog, wish me luck!

P.S. I had an incredible time last weekend at Alison's "Last Minute Holiday Gifts" workshop at Three Bags Full in Newburyport. If you have a chance, try to catch her other workshops. She's a great teacher. I started a pair of fingerless mittens for Wifey, learned how to do cables without a cable needle (so easy and SO exciting!), and immediately put the mitts on waste yarn until after Christmas. Sorry Wifey, you'll have to wait. Also waiting in the wings are my hat and mittens. Particularly after getting 18" of snow on Friday, this commuter is cold. Must make mittens. Must make hat.

My Handmade Holiday

I had a wonderful time in Vermont with Wifey's extended family. Those folks are amazing. They spend every Thanksgiving together, drinkin', smokin', jammin' (many are professional and amateur musicians), eatin', laughin', playin' with dogs, watchin' football, and harassing each other. Even Little Man (aka Shy Man) had a glorious time - reading books, gazing at the snowfall, and shouting "Rosie, no lick!" at Papa's overly-affectionate dog.

The end of Thanksgiving triggers the annual push to create handmade holiday gifts. Here's my list:
1) Scarf for Mom (DONE!)
2) Fingerless gloves for 13yoSIL
3) Fingerless gloves for 16yoSIL
4) Beanie for Bro
5) BeanBag+wooden box sets for: Lily
6) " " Leila
7) " " Owen
8) " " Charlotte
9) Secret knit-thing for Ms. G (since her MamaRoo reads the blog, I have to be quiet.)
10) Cut flannel lap blanket for my Gramma
11) Framed photos of Little Man and my Mom (for Mom)
12) Framed photos of Little Man and Papa (for Papa)
13) Felted clogs for 28yoSIL's early January birthday
14) Socks for Alice's almost-a-baby-girl

Jesus Christ*, will I finish all of this? What do you think:

[*is it still 'taking the lord's name in vain' if I pronounce it as "Hey-Zeus" Christ?]

Nearly Done & Fresh Start

The Lace Poncho for my BFF&ExGF#2 is nearly done. Weaving those damn ends remains. Any of you experienced lace knitters have a good suggestion for weaving ends into lace? I tried to avoid all mid-row ends, but I might have one somewhere in there. Here she is, being modeled by a co-worker who thankfully has tiny shoulders and is willing to repeatedly try on this poncho:

Since the BFF&ExGF#2 is currently in Borneo, I have more procrastination to complete. FYI - this photo makes the yarn look pumpkiny, but it's actually more of a rust.

In other news, in the midst of my anticipating-holiday-knitting-funk, I tried to fix the Dianne Blanket. That was a bad idea. See ... I got lazy. After trying to use a crochet hook to fix all those lost loops, I ripped out the entire section and decided to re-knit it. I tried a couple needles sizes and finally settled on no. 5. And I knit up a new section of stockinette. Yucky stockinette that looks like this:

Clearly I missed a step - the ol' rinse and hang from shower curtain rod. Ramen noodles don't make nice stockinette, idiot. Silly lazy knitter girl.

I pause this knitting-related entry to momentarily turn to why my family rocks:

another bouquet from my Mom (on my birthday)

and the translation of "Happy Birthday" in Little Man's language

OK -- back to knitting. I have three main projects due on Dec. 25th: 1 skull cap for my Brother; 1 pair of fingerless gloves for my 13yoSIL; and 1 pair of fingerless gloves for my 16yoSIL.

Brother's skull cap will be made out of Jaeger Shetland Aran in a tweedy gray:

13yoSIL's fingerless gloves will be made out of Debbie Bliss's Alpaca Silk in dark blue (photos shamelessly stolen from Wool Needlework (which allegedly has really good prices on this yarn, by the way)).

16yoSIL's fingerless gloves will be made out of Noro Kureyon in shades of gray, maroon and black:

The yarns are lovely. They cost a small fortune. Both Bro and SILs are well worth it. I can't wait to cast on.

Since we'll be driving to northern VT for Turkey Day, I must wrangle Wifey into driving the entire way.

I Love Being Right!

As part of her new radio show on Sirius Satellite Radio (which I woefully don't have), Alexis Stewart admits dancing in dykedom. Explored most thoroughly in a piece by David Kiley of Business News, Alexis:

"confessed that she had slept with the cameraman assigned to shoot her, and had experimented with lesbianism."

Several questions pop to mind:

1) was the cameraman a man?
2) did she experiment with a contestant?
3) is this simply 'testing the waters' prior to coming out?
4) does she need another lesson in lesbianism?

*A huge thanks to Katie for emailing me the breaking news. This made my day!
