With the ever-evolving New England weather bearing down on me, I've been thinking of making a shawl for myself. For those who know me, this is a very very strange thing indeed. I'm not a shawl person. I've never been a shawl person. I like them on other people, but much like red nail polish, shawls make me feel like a drag queen. However, my icebox-sauna office is forcing me to reconsider. So ... I could use a little help from the knitting gurus. Does anyone know of a distinctively non-feminine shawl pattern?

How about a mitered square shawl. Scroll to the bottom of this page: http://www.needletrax.com/knittingzone/heartland.htm
I dunno--shawl+butch--lmk what you come up with. :)
i know its overdone, and more of a wrap/scarf than a shawl, but clapotis really is a great pattern. and nothing flowery or girliegirlie about it.
Check out Folk Shawls by Cheryl Oberle. Some of the patterns in there are plain, some even rather outdoorsy.
I saw a cool-looking garter stitch shawl made from Berroco Suede. The Suede made it not too girly or glam, though the photo I saw also had fringe and I probably would leave that out. Looked like it was a simple "cast on 3 then knit, increasing at the beginning of every row" triangle.
